Go Green During National Irish-American Heritage Month

When St. Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland, he had no idea there would be rowdy parades and barrels of green beer consumed in his honor 1600 years later. Everyone knows St. Patrick’s Day is March 17^th and probably suspects that the modern-day festivities don’t much resemble the religious feasts of yore, but not many know that the entire month is dedicated to celebrating Irish-American heritage.

Whether you have family roots in Ireland or not, here are some interesting Irish-American facts to help you enjoy the month of luck and leprechauns:

• As of 2015, 32.7 million (10.2%) of U.S. residents claimed Irish ancestry (second only to German).

• Patrick’s Day began as a religious holiday and day of feasting in the 17^th century.

• New York City hosted the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1762 and Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the Big Apple. Since then, parades have spread across the U.S. and world, evolving into wild celebrations of all things Irish.

• 39% of Americans say they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and 83% wear green on that day.

• About 40 pounds of dye is used to turn the Chicago River green each year, one of America’s most famous St. Paddy’s Day traditions.

• Of the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the U.S., Boston is the most Irish, with 21% of the population claiming that ancestry.

• As of 2015, Irish Gaelic was spoken by 20,590 U.S. residents.

• There are 15 places or county subdivisions in the U.S. named Dublin, after Ireland’s capital.

• The most popular American sports teams with Irish names are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Boston Celtics.
