  • Why American Made is Important:

“I have been employed in the Lufa Garment Factory for two years. This is my first job ever. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., six days a week, I produce jackets and pants. The volume is so high—50 to 60 pieces per hour—that is not possible to keep a smiley face. My monthly pay is 2,500 taka . I hardly save any money.  In the last year I got myself three dresses. Each one cost 1,000 taka. Those were my only treats.”    -Shagorika, 18, Garment Worker, Bangladesh

When I read this message, I found it hard to believe that the factory she was referring to was a garment factory that is well known throughout the U.S. This has become a trend in the United States so companies can make an extra buck. To me, the idea of shipping jobs overseas and paying people like Shagorika 34 US dollars a month is flat out wrong (this is roughly 11 cents an hour). In addition to this, the working conditions of being in a factory for 12 hours a day cannot be the greatest. As Shagorika stated, “that is not possible to keep a smiley face.” For me, it is not possible to keep a smiley face because this is what companies are doing today. The consequence of this is that they are costing Americans their jobs. This is proven with the the jobless rate which stands at almost 9.1% (12.5 million), its highest rate since the great depression (over 15 million).

So, my husband has three of your jeans and he has three of the Duluth Trading Company (made overseas) ‘Firehose’ pants, one of which is fleece or flannel-lined. He wears them all, but he especially likes the ‘Firehose’ pants. He wants more. I’d prefer to buy them from you! Anything you can do to make something like this? He’s asked me to buy more this winter and I really don’t want to get them from DTC.

One of the main reasons for moving American businesses off shore was to break up big Labor Unions. In the past when wars broke out, American Factories had the ability to build weapons to protect us. Today our Factories are off shore, our technology & training all given to other countries. How do you build factories & train people at a moments notice?
The few American products if you find them are cheaper than foreign made.

The story of Shagorika is a very sad commentary on what is happening in the world today. Informative post. Thanks to All American Clothing for keeping it ‘Made in the USA’!

As long as you guys keep producing quality apparel, I’ll keep placing orders! Every American-made item you buy keeps at least one American working!
